Renegade Zoo, a band formed through a creative arts project for young adults with learning disabilities, has captured the essence of inclusivity and creativity. Breaking Free from Limits
Renegade Zoo is more than just a band; it's a movement. The group, comprising neurodivergent and physically diverse musicians, challenges the notion of limits. Rapper Donna Marie Duddy, known as DM, emphasizes the band's philosophy: "Renegade Zoo is about not putting limits on ourselves. It's about friendship and the opportunity to write songs."
DM's journey with songwriting was transformative. Before joining the band, she had limited chances to explore this art. "The lyrics come much easier than the melodies," she shares. This sentiment resonates with the band's overall approach, as they embrace a diverse range of musical influences.
A Musical Journey Begins
The Tuned In Project, based in Derry, played a pivotal role in the band's formation. Music media teacher Philip 'Wally' Wallace noticed the potential within the group. "We realized we had a drummer and a few different players. Once we started meeting regularly, we realized we had the makings of a band," he recalls.
Wally's mentorship has been instrumental in helping the young musicians find their voices. "We try to help the students find their voice through music and make sure they know that voice is being heard," he explains. The band's confidence and self-esteem have flourished, and their dedication to songwriting, recording, and performing is evident.
A Celebration of Creativity
The band's debut album, 'Eyes on the Road,' launched in March at Derry's New Gate Arts and Culture Centre, was a testament to their creativity. Singer and percussionist Sarah Jane Murray, known as SJ, describes the album launch as one of her highlights. "It was great to see everybody getting up dancing to these songs that we created ourselves," she says.
SJ's passion for songwriting is evident. She enjoys the spontaneous nature of their creative process, where melodies and guitar riffs emerge during rehearsals. "We'll sit together, come up with melodies and guitar riffs," she explains. This collaborative approach has resulted in a unique sound that blends rock, pop, alt-country, and hip hop.
A Message Beyond Romance
Renegade Zoo's music transcends typical themes. Singer Sorcha Friel highlights their eclectic approach: "A lot of our songs aren't typical break-up songs or romance songs. A Renegade Zoo song either has a great message or can just be a bit silly."
One of their tracks, 'Waggledance,' was inspired by an unexpected source—a "random conversation about bees one day." This showcases the band's ability to find inspiration in everyday moments, adding to their unique charm.
Performing and Growing
Performing at the Stendhal Festival has been a significant milestone for the band. Sorcha Friel embraces the energy of live performances: "The bigger the crowd, the better. I get more nervous with a more intimate crowd."
As the band continues to write new material, their future ambitions vary. DM dreams of a UK tour, while SJ believes a tour of Northern Ireland is more feasible. Sorcha's simple yet powerful hope is to "write more new songs and just be ourselves."
